Art

Our vision at Bournville, through the teaching of Art and Design, is for our children to become confident, independent artists who can articulate and value their own creativity. Our art curriculum fires children's imaginations and focuses on their creative journey rather than a prescribed outcome. Children are encouraged to take creative risks, develop personal expression and to learn from their own creative journey.

In KS1 and 2 we have chosen to use the Access Art.  This curriculum provides a rich, broad and diverse range of materials, techniques and artists.

Art and Design is taught in three terms in KS1 and 2. Across the year the units have a different focus to provide a balance in skills and techniques being taught:

- Term 1: Drawing and sketchbooks

- Term 3: Surface and colour

- Term 6: Working in 3 dimensions

Our curriculum meets the requirements of the National Curriculum. Within the planning of each unit, children  generate ideas, make, evaluate and gain knowledge about artists.

We plan balanced learning opportunities to enable:

  • Traditional skills to be balanced with experimental work;

  • Small scale work to be balanced with large scale work;

  • Quiet reflective study to be balanced with active, dynamic work;

  • Individual work to be balanced with group work;

  • Two-dimensional work to be balanced with three-dimensional work;

  • The study of historical “great” artists to be balanced with contemporary artists;

  • The study of both female and male creative role models, as well as a range of ethnicities and time periods (including visits from artists/visits to galleries/artists’ studios).
